My Rebuttal to the Sotheby's Press Release about the Auction of Mercedes Gleitze's Rolex Oyster
by Stan Czubernat

The World's First Waterproof Wristwatch, the 1918 Waltham Depollier "Field & Marine" Waterproof Wristwatch

My rebuttal to Sotheby's press release about the auction of Mercedes Gleitze's 1927 Rolex Oyster set for November 9, 2025. A history lesson was required after I read Sotheby's press release, I found numerous false statements and wildly inaccurate historical claims. Attempting to write the Americans like Depollier, Waltham & Elgin out of history to hype a watch auction is never a good idea. I brought the receipts!

Charles Depollier did in fact have two different waterproof wristwatch references, with screw down crowns, before Rolex even moved to Switzerland in 1919. Sorry Rolex, but Charles Depollier invented the archetype of the world's first waterproof wristwatch in 1918.
